James Finlay Limited - ‘Always safe’ multi-cultural safety programme
Finlay’s is a global tea and coffee producer with sites from Sri Lanka to Argentina. They developed useful leading indicators to build a Zero Harm Road Map for all of their varied sites. Evidence of buy-in from employees was strong as was the resulting improvement in health and safety performance.
The Kraft Heinz Company – Confined Spaces
The Heinz factory at Wigan is a large site. They adopted a systematic and thorough approach to the management of the 300 confined spaces across the site. In a few cases, changes to processes removed the need for entry altogether thereby eliminating the risk. For all the others detailed risk assessments and safe procedures for entry and exit were collated. The information was then presented in ways which were accessible to employees and contractors.
Farne Salmon and Trout – ‘TITAN’ safer and more efficient production process
A major producer of smoked fish products, Farne has grown from small beginnings to a factory employing 700 in 35 years. Accident rates and stress levels rose at times of peak production when line speeds were increased. So they re-designed the process and trained workers in a new approach based on a pull-through model where each link in the chain works together. They managed to show that slowing the line using the new approach actually led to improved throughput of product. Not only did they achieve a 50% reduction in accidents but also they got improved team working and better staff morale.
ABI Agri. Their ‘Engagement Programme’ covered their own sites and also farm deliveries. The use of SLOs (Safety Learning Opportunities) and Personal Engagement profiling empowered individual workers. It demonstrates the power of effective employee engagement.

Allied Bakeries, London. This year they got to second place with an innovative project on safety of Mechanical Handling Equipment in their warehouse which led to a two thirds reduction in incidents involving clamp trucks and pedestrians.
Green Isle Foods, Portumna, County Galway, Ireland 4 entries including one that led to a significant reduction in exposure to flour dust and 3 which removed serious manual handling risks with rigorous approach to risk assessment and good use of internal resources to solve the problems.
