Letter from the Chair

Mid Shires Chair Monthly Message – January

Happy New Year!

Thanks very much to Phoebe Richards, Human Factors Ergonomist, Aston Martin Lagonda who gave a fabulous presentation on ‘Ergonomics in Manufacturing’. In her presentation on the 13th December 2018 Phoebe gave an overview of Human Factors Ergonomics, her role at Aston Martin and how ergonomics contributes to Health & Safety best practice. The attendees were given the chance to see what the future looks like for Ergonomics at Aston Martin and try on the very latest ‘Strap-on exoskeleton’ which turns you into your own chair!

Our next meeting is on the 10th January 2019 and the presentation ‘Lone Working – A toolkit to manage distributed workers’. The presenters are Professor Karina Nielsen and Tim Henstock.

Professor Karina Nielsen is Chair of Work Psychology and Director of the Institute for Work Psychology at the Sheffield University Management School, University of Sheffield. One of Karina’s main strands of research concerns the role of leaders in promoting the health and safety of workers. She is particularly interested in the role of line managers and how they can promote workers’ health and wellbeing in different contexts.

Tim Henstock Area Sales Manager, Peoplesafe. Tim has worked for Peoplesafe and its associated companies in the Lone Worker Safety industry for nearly 5 years and within the lone worker industry specifically for 10 years. His main focus is meeting with both Public and Private sector organisations across a diverse array of industries, to assist with reviewing their lone working procedures and advise on the most suitable solutions to help protect those lone workers.

Professor Karina Nielsen will present the main outcomes of a recent research project funded by IOSH to explore how line managers and OSH professionals can ensure the health and wellbeing of distributed workers. Tim Henstock will provide practical advice and guidance on managing your distributed workforce.

Working in collaboration with the IOSH Fire Risk Management Group, the Mid Shires committee continue to plan the next annual seminar on ‘Fire Safety’, which will be held at the Dunchurch Park Hotel on the 21st March 2019. We always have a great attendance at this annual event so it’s definitely a date to put in your diary.

A quick reminder that we run a 30-minute CPD/IPD round table discussion before our Branch meeting, allowing members to share their experiences and provide support for each other. A Mid Shires committee member will be available to chair the meeting from 17.30 until 18.00 and any member with CPD or IPD question is welcome.

Our Branch meetings are held on the evening of the second Thursday of the month at the Dunchurch Park Hotel CV22 6QW.  Unless otherwise stated, the meetings begin with networking, accompanied by a light buffet served at 18.00, the presentations begin at 19.00 and we aim to finish by 20.45 at the latest.

We always aim to provide you the members with the topics that you wish us to cover and if you have a specific question that you would like some advice on you can always take advantage of our Q&A session at the start of each meeting.

If you’re new to our meetings, you’re especially welcome and we hope that you’ll enjoy our friendly environment. Whether you’re a visitor or regular attendee at our branch activities, we thank you for your support and look forward to seeing you.

Best Regards,

Roger Ward
