Branch AGM nominees

The following nominees are eligible for election to the Branch committee.

Name: James Carter
Committee Role: Committee Member
Supporting statement: Being a Committee member of my local IOSH Branch has always been an ambition of mine since attending my first branch event over 5 years ago not long after completing my NEBOSH General Certificate. Over the years the branch has positively influenced me in providing me with the fantastic opportunity for networking and through my CPD allowing me to grow into the industry. This has without a doubt supported my career in the skillsets provided but also allowing me to interact with like-minded individuals. More recently, during my journey into becoming a Chartered Member of the Institute, the Branch and Committee Members have really supported me in achieving this goal through direct mentoring and sacrificing their own time in supporting me. This journey has given me a good understanding of the current IOSH Strategy in Work 2022 and a good understanding of the IOSH Code of Conduct. Since attending my first meeting over 5 years ago, my career and experience has grown in many sectors including Retail, Logistics, Funeralcare and Childcare. As such I have developed a wide level of experience in managing safety in these areas and feel I can offer a rounded professional opinion. I feel that I am now positioned correctly to contribute positively to the branch as a Committee Member through my own development, through my own experience and through my desire to support others in the industry. As I’ve said the level of support I have been given by the branch has been brilliant and I would like to offer something back now in a similar way.

Name: Dawn Sylvester
Committee Role: Committee Member
Supporting statement: I feel that I am a strong candidate for this volunteering role as I would bring a wealth of H&S knowledge, having worked in H&S/Compliance management roles for the last 15+ years. My experience is predominately in the Facilities Management industry. I enjoy networking with other H&S professionals and want 'to get out there' and potentially broaden my areas of expertise and knowledge. I feel that being a part of this committee will be a great start in achieving this. I would describe myself as flexible, committed, hardworking, professional, and am always looking for improvement, whilst always striving to 'be the best in everything I do'. My current role is a national strategic position. I am responsible for developing new protocols and procedures to help drive compliance, and bring consistency. Sub-Contractor Management, Working with Electricity, Lone Working, and Working at Height are just some of the risks we face within FM, and potentially discussing such topics with other experienced H&S professionals would be fantastic, and an opportunity not to be missed. As a 'Chartered Member' of IOSH, since 2012, I appreciate the importance of the IOSH Code of Conduct, and I will continue to ensure that I comply and be an exemplar member.

Name: Alan Dunn
Committee Role: Committee Member
Supporting statement: My tenure over the past two years as the East Midland Branch Education Advisor/Mentor advising, encouraging and seeing the development of our members through all the categories has been extremely satisfying and rewarding.

Nothing would give me greater pleasure than to continue in this role supporting our members through their IPD and CPD for the next term of office 2019 onwards.

Please accept this nomination request for consideration in the hope of being re elected for a second term of office.

Name: Andrew Needham
Committee Role: Communications Coordinator

Name: David Spilsbury
Committee Role: Secretary
Supporting statement: I am a Chartered Occupational Safety and Health professional, also a Chartered Engineer and Chartered Quality Practitioner. I am currently a freelance consultant, providing advice on Health & Safety, Environment and Quality, following a successful career in industry and consultancy. I have served on the IOSH East Midlands Branch Executive Committee for 8 years of which 6 years have been as Secretary. I am proud to assist Members and prospective Members in the development of their CPD. The role of Secretary has involved maintaining communications with other Branches and Groups, and direct with Members. I have actively lead the development of the Lincolnshire region providing local talks away from the centre of the East Midlands. I have also been a key supporter in developing CPD for members in the region participating in CPD events. I wish to continue my close association with IOSH and continue to serve as Secretary.

Name: Darren Broadhead
Committee Role: Committee Member
Supporting statement: I have over 20 years of experience of driving forward Health & Safety performance in a diverse group of organisations with my last in-house role as Global Head of H&S for Holcim, a cement manufacturer with operations in 80 countries. Prior to that, I worked in the automotive, aeronautical and food and drink sectors addressing H&S and Environmental matters globally. In September 2015 I started my own business providing guidance to Executive Groups on Leading and Managing H&S as a business risk in an effective way. I believe that my knowledge and my network of peers provides a valuable resource to the IOSH Membership. I also believe that it is important that I keep learning from the experience and knowledge of others. Supporting the East Midlands Branch also provides that opportunity for me. I am passionate about creating highly effective, competent H&S professionals to support leadership and management teams in keeping people safe and healthy. I have chaired and participated in a variety of in business and trade body committees addressing H&S and broader Sustainability issues, including chair of the H&S Task Force for the Global Cement Sustainability Initiative. I have experience of establishing groups, managing their progress and communicating with members and those that they represent. I would relish the opportunity to support the East Midlands Branch as a committee member. Thank you!

Name: Graham Twigg
Committee Role: Committee Member
Supporting statement: I have been a Committee member of the East Midlands Branch for a few years now. My wife Michelle and I are both Chartered Fellows and we would not have been able to serve the Committee adequately on our own but by job sharing, we are able to provide value-added support, including a much greater focus on health and wellbeing due to our contacts/wider network.

Name: Michelle Twigg
Committee Role: Committee Member
Supporting statement: I'm already a serving committee member in a job-share role with my husband Graham. I really enjoy being part of this group and have a keen interest in running regional meetings in Derbyshire so we can add a varied range of topics, days and times to give members more choice and opportunity to attend meetings. As the East Midlands covers such a large area, the regional meetings help the members access the Branch for support, networking and CPD through the speaker sessions.

Name: Martin Goodman
Committee Role: Immediate Past Chair
Supporting statement: I have been the Chair of the Branch for the last 2 years and to say the least there has been a number of changes with how IOSH run the membership and how that effects the committees ongoing work. As the past chair I can support the incoming chair to give consistency and advice as he/she fulfils their commitments.

Supporting statement:

Name: Roger Mitchell
Committee Role: Committee Member
Supporting statement: I would like to stand as a Committee Member, as I feel that I have the necessary experience and energy to make a difference and support the East Midlands branch and IOSH. Having previously line managed a colleague in Ankara in Turkey, who was in awe of IOSH and me being on the Committee. In Turkey there is no IOSH or equivalent. We must value and support IOSH for future generations. On a more local level, I feel that I can support members to complete their IPD and CPD and for them to move up through the membership categories. I am interested in strengthening links with similar professional organisations such as CIEH and BOHS. Finally, to make branch meetings more welcoming for new or infrequent members and visitors. In recent branch meetings I have sought out people on their own and talk and welcome them.
